Sleeping Indian Designs began with a love of the outdoors and a desire to create clothing superior to everything else on the market. We were frustrated by existing outdoor clothing that fell far short when facing the extremes of nature. There was plenty of gear available, but nothing that met our expectations. We were looking for qualities that are important to anyone serious about experiencing the great outdoors.

We wanted clothing that is comfortable over a wide temperature range and is of functional and practical design. We wanted it to be durable, yet lightweight and not bulky. We wanted clothing that is quiet and provides superior concealment. We wanted it to be wind- and water-resistant, yet breathable. Simple, right?

Well, turning our "simple" list of requirements for functional field wear into actual clothing required an extraordinary amount of work. But we did it. We developed a warm- and cold-weather clothing system that allows you to experience the outdoors from -40°F to +90°F with the least amount of layering and the greatest amount of freedom.

Our company’s name comes from Sheep Mountain
in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, known as “Sleeping Indian,”
for it’s distinctive profile.

We enlisted nature as an ally in our effort. Rather than look to modern, high-tech materials for our apparel, we chose wool and cotton. There may never be a "perfect" fabric for outdoor clothing, but wool for cold-weather gear and cotton for warm-weather clothing come closer than anything we've found. The fabrics we created take great effort and time to produce. They require a number of costly and intricate processes to manufacture. But we think the results are well worth the effort.
